Fraunhofer ISE is coordinating the Nanospec project. The team of Dr. Jan Christoph Goldschmidt is developing efficient solar cells, photonic stuctures, unique characterization techniques and is in charge of realizing and testing complete systems with all components.

From University of Bern, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Dr. Karl W. Krämer and Konrad Uhlmann are involved in the NanoSpec project. Dr. Krämer is leader of the solid state chemistry group, see http://kraemer.dcb.unibe.ch for further information. At Bern the upconverter material is developed. The upconversion process converts infra-red light to light of shorter wavelength which can be absorbed by silicon.

Techion - Isral Institute of Technology: A science and technology research university, among the world's top ten, dedicated to the creation of knowledge and the development of human capital and leadership, for the advancement of the State of Israel and all humanity.  The institute includes 19 different departments (engineering, basic science, architecture, medicine), and a few multidisciplinary institute, including nanoscience and renewable energy and nanomedicine.

Group:  Synthesizing and characterizing semiconductor nanocrystals, dots, rods, cubes, wires, ribbon, multipods.  Special magneto-optical characterization, single dot spectroscopy, microwave conductivity, and other modulated spectroscopy.  Manpower:  10 graduate students, 3 postdocs, 2 technicians.

The Heriot-Watt University (HWU) is a technologically-focussed research-led university based in Edinburgh, Scotland. One of the research strengths of Prof. Richards' group is the application of luminescent materials to photovoltaic devices, including silicon solar cells.  Our tasks for NanoSpec are mainly focussed on the optical characterisation of the luminescent materials, both rare-earth phosphors for up-conversion and near-infrared emitting quantum dot materials for the fluorescent solar concentrator.  Of particular interest will be understanding the performance of these materials under broadband excitation and over a wide power range, as provided by a 8W supercontinuum laser (400-2000nm).

Within NanoSpec, the Institute of Photovoltaics at Forschungszentrum Jülich investigates the optimization of thin-film silicon solar cells for use with the fluorescent-upconverter concept and leads the simulation and modelling activities.

The Utrecht University in the Netherlands is one of the leading Universities in Europe with a focus on research related to Earth and Sustainability. The group of Prof. Andries Meijerink has a strong background in spectral conversion using lanthanide ions and quantum dots for a.o. energy efficient lamps and solar cells. Within the NanoSpec programme highly efficient IR emitting QDs will be developed and characterized for spectral and spatial concentration of IR solar radiation. Upconversion materials and new upconversion schemes for IR to NIR conversion will be studied for lanthanides using an extensive infrastructure for (time-resolved) IR-spectroscopy.

The Eindhoven University of Technology is one of the leading technology research centers of the Netherlands and a world leader in industrial/academic cooperation. The research for Nanospec is housed in the group of Functional Organic Materials and Devices (SFD) in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry. Dr. Debije’s group has extensive experience in the designing of optical bandgap materials based on cholesteric liquid crystals, and have applied these materials to solar energy devices in the form of luminescent solar concentrators. Our contribution to the program will be the solution-deposition of broadband reflectors to manage both incoming and emission light within the device architecture
